Artist Statement

My practice begins with looking closely. I am interested in the textures, patterns and structures that surround us, particularly within the natural and everyday world. Through drawing and painting, I take these observations and gradually transform them through repetition, layering and mark-making.
I am drawn to details that can easily be overlooked, the surface of a leaf, the structure of a natural form, or a pattern that emerges through repetition. As I work, these familiar references begin to shift. Forms can suggest organic matter, microscopic structures, growth or movement, but I do not want them to settle into one fixed meaning. Instead, I am interested in the space between recognition and abstraction, where something can feel both familiar and unknown.

Repetition is an important part of my process. Repeated marks and gestures build layers, creating changes in density, rhythm and scale. Through this process, an image develops gradually, often moving away from its original source and becoming something more intuitive and open-ended.
My work invites the viewer to slow down and look closely. I want the experience of looking to be active and exploratory, allowing different details, textures and associations to emerge over time. Ultimately, my practice is about the transformation that can happen through sustained attention, how looking closely at something can alter the way we understand and experience it.
